All About the transcontinental railroad
The two companies met at one spot and drove in a golden spike, the one to the left, to "marry" the railroads. Once they were done they took a picture. But if you look close you can see that there isn't any other races than whites. For example, The Western company used Chinese workers. These workers had to drill a hole, put in a stick of dynamite, lite it and push off the cliff. While hanging in a basket. As they swung out the dynamite would go off, and they would swing back in after. And do it again. The Eastern company used mostly Irish workers. The Eastern Pacific had it a lot easier because the ground wasn't as rough. The Western company had to get through and around mountains. While the Eastern Company was on the plains, for most of it. The Eastern company barely ever encountered mountains.
In the picture below you can see the Eastern Pacific, from Promontory Point to Omaha, laid more tracks. You can also see another section of track, which was laid after the fact. It was added onto the Western Pacific`s section, Promontory Point to Sacramento.
This railroad allowed people to sell and market goods, from the west. Also it allowed people to get to and from the east and west coasts. Lastly it allowed people to get jobs. But, with every good thing something brings in, it has to take something out. That something was an animal. Can you guess..... Buffalo. At one point the Buffalo herds were in the billions. Then they were wiped out. People would get on the train, pull up beside the herds, shoot one and just leave. If you want to read more click the BUFFALO tab to the left.
